You might think you're stepping into a cozy cafe in Florence or Rome, with that warmth & familiarity that immediately radiates a welcoming feeling, however you've actually stepped into 'New Order' in Prahran.
Opening its doors in 2019, this cafe has made quite a name for itself and is a favourite among locals (including myself!). It's not just the fresh produce, beautiful flowers, delicious snacks and smooth coffee that sets 'New Order' apart from the rest, but it's also the delightful and upbeat staff who make you feel as if you've been a local for years. Whether you're hungry or in a funk, the team at 'New Order' have got you covered and you'll leave not only with a full belly, but with a big smile too.
Although I've only had the pleasure of going to 'New Order' while COVID-19 measures were in place in Melbourne, the quality of both the food and service is something to be commended. I look forward to my first dine-in experience, where I can immerse myself further into the world that is 'New Order'.
I chatted to Jesse Feldy, the man who runs both the cafe and the coffee machine, and got his insights into what makes his cafe unique and what the future holds for this charming corner cafe.
The essence of New Order is almost reminiscent of old-timey Italy - how would you describe New Order?
Since opening my first cafe in 2012, the concept for each shop hasn’t changed. A place that is incredibly cozy, friendly, warm and inviting. Almost like a day time pub - A place where everyone knows your name.
Italy has so many great hidden cafe/deli/espresso bars and the inside's ambience is a reflection of inspiration that I have seen in my travels and great experiences in hospitality.

How do you make New Order stand out from the rest?
Like all the other ventures, the pillars of hospitality haven't changed for me. It’s about Quality of Food, Coffee, Service & Atmosphere. Nail these and if your spot is on point then be grateful & humble to each customer and you should build a following. But as I said, I am so lucky to have such great staff & customers around us that helps set New Order different from the rest.
I do think moving forward, since COVID, my ideas have shifted so don’t be surprised to see a few changes in the coming months! But my lips are sealed on these secrets.
I love that you have the option to Pay it Forward and buy a coffee for a healthcare worker - why is this initiative important to you?
The hospital staff are a huge part of our trade and to begin we wanted to reward them with a discount on their coffee’s & The Pay it forward scheme. The Pay it Forward - with the COVID lockdown and hospitals being inundated - customers have been so generous. Many buying a "Pay it forward" coffee each day, with some customers even putting $1000 down every few months. Our amazing customers have been extremely generous.
In every cafe I have done, we have donated our tips to charity. Each month is a rotating charity that is close to us, our staff and our community.

What can a customer do to make your day?
Customers make my day by coming back to our shop and grabbing a coffee is enough for me. I am so humbled people create a loyalty with us and I am really proud of what I and the staff have created at New Order.
